A supramolecular polymer gel was prepared by self-assembly of a heteroditopic A–B monomer based on benzo[18]crown-6. Such a gel shows interesting gel–sol transition in response to dual-stimuli owing to the dynamically reversible complexation between the benzo[18]crown-6 and primary alkylammonium salt moieties. Therefore, these fascinating properties make this supramolecular gel a promising intelligent material.

In order to investigate the influence of chemical structures on self-assembly morphology, six amphiphilic pillar[5]arenes C1, C2, C3, C4, D, and E with different hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups were synthesized. When they were dissolved in water, they all self-assembled into vesicles first. The amine groups on C1 and C2 can reversibly react with CO2 in water, so vesicles self-assembled from them could reversibly transform into micelles by bubbling CO2 and N2. More interestingly, C1, C2, C3, and C4 with the same N-(2-aminoethyl)acetamide units as the hydrophilic groups all further self-assembled into microtubes, on the other hand, E with acetohydrazide units as the hydrophilic groups further self-assembled into nanosheets in water. Amphiphilic pillar[5]arene D could not further self-assemble into any other morphology in water itself, but the carboxylate groups on D can coordinate with silver ions so it could further self-assemble into dendritic structures in water. Dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy were employed to characterize the self-assembly processes of these six amphiphilic pillar[5]arenes and the resultant self-assemblies. The acidified microtubes, which have ammonium ions on their surfaces, could capture negatively charged DNA through electrostatic interactions in water.

Abstract

By the introduction of methoxycarbonyl-methoxy groups and hydroxyl groups into a pillar structure, a pillararene entirely with two types of functional groups was successfully prepared, which can form a stable 1:1 complex with a bis(imidazolium) salt in CHCl3/acetone solution (V:V=1:1).

Abstract

It is well known that pillar[5]arenes have two most stable conformations (pS and pR) in their crystal structures. Because of the intramolecular H-bonding interactions, substituents, temperature, solvent and so on, the rotational behaviors of the phenolic units on pillararenes are also common. This paper showed some other kinds of conformations in the functionalized pillar[5]arenes and gave evidence for a bulky unit (1,4-methoxycarbonylmethoxybenzene unit) flipping in the solid state. The presence of hydrogen bonding facilitated the intermolecular self-assembly in terms of energy-minimized packing in the crystals. Thus, the main driving force for the flipping of this bulky unit might be both the intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the phenolic units on pillararenes and quadrupolar hydrogen bonding between the host and water. This paper helps us to have a better understanding on the conformations of pillar[5]arenes.

Three threaded structures capped by fluoro/chlorocarbon blocking groups with different sizes were constructed by template synthesis based on the benzo-21-crown-7/secondary ammonium salt recognition motif, as confirmed by 1H NMR, electrospray mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray analysis. The transformation from a rotaxane-like entity into a rotaxane was achieved by replacing the end group from the trifluoroacetic ester group to its trichloroacetic ester analogue.

Abstract

The isomeric tetrahydroxylated pillar[5]arenes were synthesized through partial oxidation of 1,4-dimethoxypillar[5]arene or 1,4-dimethoxypillar[4]arene[1]quinone by (NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6] and then reduction by Na2S2O4. The intermediate 1,4-dimethoxypillar[3]arene[2]quinones have two constitutional isomers. The yield of the 1,3-isomer 1 can reach 42 %, and was far higher than that of the 1,2-isomer 2 (formed in trace amounts). The approach provides an efficient way to prepare constitutional-isomeric selectively functionalized pillar[5]arenes 3 and 4. Furthermore, the host–guest complexation of 3 and 4 with a bis(imidazolium) salt was investigated.

An AB-type heteroditopic monomer was prepared by incorporating a dialkylammonium salt into a copillar[5]arene prepared from the co-oligomerization of 1-(10-bromodecyloxy)-4-methoxybenzene and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. Based on the self-assembly of this new monomer in chloroform, a linear supramolecular polymer formed. The formation of the supramolecular polymer was characterized by various techniques including 1H NMR, NOESY, DOSY, specific viscosity and SEM. This supramolecular polymer was anion responsive, since the self-assembly of the monomers could be destroyed by the addition of chloride anions. This study provides an efficient and convenient strategy to control the formation of supramolecular polymers.
