A novel C3-symmetric benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTAs) decorated with three identical pillar[5]arene tails was designed, synthesized and characterized. The compound can gelate acetonitrile at low concentration (0.2 wt%) upon sonication at room temperature, but a precipitate was obtained by a conventional heating–cooling process. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the gel and precipitate were constructed by entangled, high-aspect-ratio flexible bundles of nanofibrils. UV-vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism, Fourier transform infrared microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction showed that the compound formed chiral, elongated, columnar aggregates with nanofiber morphology by a combination of intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the N–H and CO of amides, π–π stacking (H-aggregates) and hydrophobic interactions of peripheral groups.

Abstract
A new host molecule consists of four terpyridine groups as the binding sites with zinc(II) ion and a copillar[5]arene incorporated in the center as a spacer to interact with guest molecule was designed and synthesized. Due to the 120 ° angle of the rigid aromatic segment, a cross-linked dimeric hexagonal supramolecular polymer was therefore generated as the result of the orthogonal self-assembly of metal–ligand coordination and host–guest interaction. UV/Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, viscosity and dynamic light-scattering techniques were employed to characterize and understand the cross-linking process with the introduction of zinc(II) ion and guest molecule. More importantly, well-defined morphology of the self-assembled supramolecular structure can be tuned by altering the adding sequence of the two components, that is, the zinc(II) ion and the guest molecule. In addition, introduction of a competitive ligand suggested the dynamic nature of the supramolecular structure.

A novel Hg2+ ion induced reversible ring contraction was achieved employing the intramolecular reaction of isobutylene with an aromatic hydroxyl group of cyclophane; reversibility of the reaction was facilitated by excess addition of NaBH4 which also resulted in complexation. The ring contraction and expansion was monitored by UV-VIS absorption, and by fluorescence and 1H NMR spectra. Switchable fluorescence behavior (on—off—on) was observed when the ring-size was tuned from a 19-membered ring to an 18-membered and vice versa. This fine tuning has the potential to be applied in the construction of new supramolecular devices.

A series of novel single-phase color tunable LiGd(WO4)2(LGW):Re3+ (Re = Tm, Tb, Dy, Eu) phosphors have been synthesized by a solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR, photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence decay curves were utilized to characterize the as-prepared samples. Under the excitation of UV light, LGW:Tm3+, LGW:Tb3+, LGW:Dy3+ and LGW:Eu3+ exhibit the characteristic emissions of Tm3+ (blue), Tb3+ (green), Dy3+ (yellow) and Eu3+ (red), respectively. On the one hand, by simply adjusting the doping concentration of Eu3+ ions in the LGW:2% Tm3+, 4% Tb3+, x% Eu3+ system, a white emission in a single-phase was achieved by blending simultaneously the blue, green, and red emissions of Tm3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+ ions in the LGW host, in which the energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ ions was found to play an important role. On the other hand, a white emission can also be realized based on the energy transfer from Tm3+ to Dy3+ ions in the LGW:2% Tm3+, x% Dy3+ system. The energy transfer mechanism from Tm3+ to Dy3+ ions has been demonstrated to be through dipole–quadrupole interaction and the critical distance (RTm–Dy) calculated by the concentration quenching method is 16.03 Å. The PL properties of as-prepared materials indicate that LGW:Re3+ (Re = Tm, Tb, Dy, Eu) may be potentially applied as single-phase white-light-emitting phosphors for UV-excited WLEDs.

A novel methodology was discovered to construct multi-phenyl substituted pyrido-fused benzimidazole (PBI) core frameworks via direct oxidative intramolecular C–H amination of α-unsubstituted pyridinium salts under transition-metal free conditions. The resulting highly π-conjugated PBI derivatives exhibited highly tunable fluorescent emission not only in solution but also in the solid state.

ABSTRACT
New highly conjugated bispyryliums were synthesized by the Knoevenagel reaction between α-CH3 pyrylium and aromatic dicarboxaldehydes. Their photophysical properties were fully investigated. The results showed that they exhibited a tunable fluorescence emission colors ranging from green to red in solution by changing the properties of connecting π bridges. The experimental results were also supported by theoretical calculations. In addition, their fluorescence emission in solid state was also investigated preliminarily. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of a simple amidopyridinium-based sensor (F1) and its fluorescence behavior toward H2PO4− (Pi) were investigated. The anthryl group in F1 exhibited a strong excimer emission via Pi-directed assembly of F1; other anions showed a negligible effect. The Pi-induced assembly of F1 was rationalized by photophysical experiments and DFT calculation.

A simple 7-hydroxycoumarin-based compound L1 was rationally designed and synthesized behaving as a highly selective fluorescent sensor for Hg2+ in aqueous media. It shows selective and “turn-on” fluorescence upon addition of Hg2+. Fluorescence titration and 1H NMR investigation reveal that the fluorescence enhancement of L1 upon Hg2+ addition is promoted by Hg2+-induced cyclization of L1 to a more rigid dihydrobenzofuran derivative.

A new tripodal receptor for anion sensing based on amide-pyridinium as recognition site and nitro-benzene as signaling unit was designed and successfully synthesized. This receptor showed high selectivity and strong binding affinity toward AcO− over the investigated anions, especially over H2PO4−. Addition of AcO− induced clear color change of solution from colorless to yellow, realizing the “naked-eye” detection. UV–Vis and 1H NMR experiments indicated the selectivity might origin from the synergistic effects arising from hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions and conformational change.
