Why so slow? Why did it take several decades for the concept of selectivity to develop into a fundamental consideration in organic chemistry? The Essay describes the reception by the scientific community in the first half of the 20th century of the principles of kinetic versus thermodynamic control and explains the physical basis of selectivity (see picture: energy diagram for the reaction of pentamethylenefulvene (A) and maleic anhydride (B)).

Fortschritte resultierten aus der Einbeziehung theoretischer Gedanken aus der physikalischen Chemie zu Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit und -gleichgewicht. Michael Dewar's attempt to introduce physical organic chemists to molecular orbital ideas began with his book The Electronic Theory of Organic Chemistry (1949) and his lectures at the Montpellier Colloquium (1950). Influential members of the community resisted these efforts for a number of reasons, which included Dewar's inability to communicate his ideas to chemists in need of instruction and also a series of apparent errors in working out the experimental details of his mechanistic proposals. Radical changes in the chemical community's thinking were required in the discovery of the pinacol rearrangment [Eq. (a)]. Clarity was achieved only after the incorrect “conventional” atomic weights, which gave completely erroneous molecular formulas, were rejected and people dared to violate Kekulé's rules of reaction concerning the connectivity of the carbon skeleton in chemical reaction.

Eine radikale Änderung in der Denkweise der Chemiker war für die Aufklärung der Pinakolumlagerung [Gl. (a)] erforderlich. Klarheit wurde erst erreicht, als man die falschen „konventionellen“ Atomgewichte aufgegeben hatte, die vollkommen fehlerhafte Molekülformeln ergaben, und sich traute, Kekulés Regeln über die Konnektivität des Kohlenstoffgerüsts in chemischen Reaktionen zu verletzen.
