Six 3,3′-azobis-1,2,4-triazole (H2ABT) complexes [Mn2 (ABT)(bpy)4(H2O)2]·(ABT)·4H2O (1), [Mn(ABT)(H2O)4]·H2O (2), [Co(ABT)(en)2]·(H2ABT)·2H2O (3), [Cd(ABT)0.5(en)2]·(ABT)0.5·2H2O (4), [Zn(ABT)0.5(en)2]·(ABT)0.5·2H2O (5), [Cu(ABT)0.5(en)2]·(ABT)0.5 (6), where en = ethylenediamine, bpy = 2,2-bipyridine, have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In complexes 1–6, the unusual face-to-face π–π stacking interactions among heterocyclic aromatic rings and three kinds of hydrogen bonds C–H⋯O, N–H⋯O and O–H⋯O are observed. The π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions are responsible for the stabilization of these 2D and 3D supramolecular structures. The aqueous solutions of 1–6 with the concentration of 6 × 10−5 mol dm−3 show photochromism. The fluorescent properties of solid-state samples of 1–6 have been investigated. The π–π stacking interaction energies for 1–6 were calculated at MP2 level using Gaussian 09 suite and demonstrated.

Abstract
A hydrated 5-azotriazolyl salicylic acid of [(H3ATSA)]⋅2 H2O (1) and its CdII complex of [Cd2(H2ATSA)4]⋅13 H2O (2) have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and a neutral trans-Z-enol form of H3ATSA and another anionic trans-E-enol H2ATSA− isomer have been found in 1 and 2, respectively. The yellow crystal of 2 can be transformed in situ into red crystals in NaOH solution. The diffuse reflectance and photoluminescent spectra for the crystal powder samples and the aqueous solutions of 1 and 2 have been investigated. The DFT and TDDFT calculations at B3LYP/6–31G* level for 1 and B3LYP/Lanl2dz level for 2 have been used to demonstrate the characteristic absorption spectra and the trans-enol to cis-keto photo- and thermoisomeric reaction for the ATSA3− anion. The onion cell imaging taken by confocal laser scanning microscope was observed with 1 and 2 as fluorescent labels.

Four iodide anionic water clusters of I–(H2O)1–4 in two supramolecular complexes of [Fe(phen)3][I2(H2O)3] (1) and [Zn(phen)3][I2(H2O)4.5] (2) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The diffuse reflectance spectra for the solid iodide anionic water clusters of I–(H2O)1–4 were investigated, and their absorption bands were demonstrated by denisty functional theory calculation. The electrochemical reaction of I–(H2O)1–4 → I· + e–(H2O)1–4 with the oxidation potential of Ep = 0.61 eV was first found and reported in two aqueous solutions (1 mmol·dm–3) of 1 and 2.

Six 5,5′-azotetrazolate based supramolecular complexes of {[Co(en)3]2(AT)3·3H2O} (1), {[M(en)2(trans-AT)2](trans-H2en)·2H2O} (M = Ni, 2; Cu, 3), {[Ni(en)2(trans-AT)](trans-AT)(trans-H2en)·2H2O} (4), {[Cu(en)2(trans-AT)]·2H2O} (5) and {[Cu(en)2(trans-AT)0.5](trans-AT)0.5} (6) (en = ethylenediamine) have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The trans-AT2− anions in 1–6 show four different coordinating modes. In 1–6, the unusual face-to-face AT2−–AT2− π−–π− stacking interactions with the separated interplanar center to center distances ranging from 3.32 to 4.0 Å were observed. The π−–π− stacking, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions are responsible for the stabilization of these 3D supramolecular structures. The aqueous solutions of 1–6 with the concentration of 2 × 10−5 mol L−1 show photochromism that originates from the trans–cis isomerisation of AT2− anionic ligands. The onion cell imaging with 1–6 as labels has also been reported.

Seven 3-D metallic complexes coordinated and controlled by the deprotonated anions of H2BTA ligand (H2BTA = bis(tetrazolyl)amine): a 0-D compound of Co(HBTA)3·4.5H2O (1), two 1-D compounds of Cu(BTA)(H2O)2 (2) and Mn4(BTA)4(H2O)12·2H2O (3), a 2-D compounds [Mn7(BTA)6(OH)2(H2O)12] (4) and three 3-D compounds containing two isomorphous complexes of [Mn(BTA)2Na2(H2O)2] (5) and [Co(BTA)2Na2(H2O)2] (6) as well as Mn(BTA)(H2O) (7) have been synthesized under different synthetic conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In 1–7, the deprotonated anions of the H2BTA ligand control the different crystal structures using not only the different coordinations to transition metal ions as several different multidentate ligands but simultaneously the formation of complementary intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
Five complexes with the formula {[(CuL)2Cr(μ-SCN)2]OH}n (1), [Mn(CuL)2(NCS)2] (2), [Cu(CuL)2(NCS)2] (3), [Ni(CuL)2(NCS)2] (4) and [Co(CuL)(NCS)2(CH3OH)2]2 (5), (H2L = 2,3-dioxo-5,6,14,15-dibenzo-1,4,8,12-tetraazacyclopentadeca-7,13-diene) were synthesized and structurally determined. The structure of 1 has oxamido-bridged trinuclear [CrIIICuII2] units and consists of a 1D helical chain formed by the linking of copper(II) and chromium(III) ions through the oxamido and μ1,3-NCS bridges. The structure of 2, 3 or 4 consists of oxamido-bridged trinuclear [MIIICuII2] molecules (for 2–4, M = Mn, Cu, Ni, respectively) and arranges in a 1D zig-zag chain. Complex 5 is a composed of a tetranuclear [CoII2CuII2] molecule with both the oxamido and μ1,3-NCS bridges. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements (2–300K) of 1, 2, 4 and 5 show pronounced antiferromagnetic interactions between the copper(II) atom and neighbouring metal ions.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
